The International Race of Champions or IROC was an auto racing competition which was promoted as an equivalent to an All-Star Game or the Masters. Drivers raced identically-prepared stock cars that were set up by a single team of mechanics in an effort to make the race purely a test of driving ability.

The race was run with 6-12 invited drivers. It was created in 1973 by Riverside International Raceway President Les Richter, Mike Phelps and Roger Penske. Mark Donahue was the first driver to win the championship in 1974. He was driving a sports car, a Porsche Carrera RSRs.

In 2007, IROC could no longer find any sponsor and postponed its first two races at Texas and Daytona. It went hiatus on 2007 but hoped to return with sponsors in 2008. However on March 7, 2008 IROC announced auctioning its off tools, equipments, and memorabilia. After 30 years, IROC closed down.

Volkswagen tried to name one of its cars with the moniker "IROC" on it. But this one did not directly refer to the race. It was a concept car presented at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. The Volkswagen IROC has a 210 bhp version of VW's TSI twin charged engine. The name IROC was a play over Scirocco since its name has the central letters of the word "scIROCco" in it.

The car that was really named after the popular competition was the 1985 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z. It featured an upgraded suspension with lowered springs, large diameter sway bars, specially valve shocks, special decal package and an optional Tuned Port Injection system that was taken from the Corvette. The 1985 Camaro also had refreshed noses and new deeper valances. The Camaro IROC-Z was part of Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1985.

And the good thing about Vegas is that there are a lot of car rental dealers that offer sports cars for rent. Many rental companies allow you, race car fan or not, to experience the speed behind the wheel. If you are planning to take one for a spin, you may want to check your options out first. If you research well, you will find good car rentals that offer you a run-down about the car you choose to rent. This will help you drive the car better and get a ride at its optimum performance.

You're probably racing to your computer to surf the Internet. Be sure, thought, to apply for reservations once you've chosen your pick. Yes, you can get car rental reservations through their websites. They also offer other services such as car fleets and rates, rental policies, and VIP services.
