My Journey Through Unbearable Pain

Pain can be so frustrating. It can range from minor to totally life altering and if you don't have the life altering pain then you can't possibly understand what it can do. Let me share a story of how pain changed my life.

It all started last year. I had a minor surgery that was supposed to be no big deal. I woke up from the surgery and my back was hurting. That was weird because the surgery was no where near my back. I figured I had probably just laid on it wrong or something and it would go away.

Well a month went by and my pain went from annoying to, "I can't believe how bad this hurts." I started taking pain medication. The doctor said that is was probably just some transferred pain from my surgery. Something like I was holding myself differently causing muscle strain and it would go away.

Then the pain started affecting my sleep. The pain got so bad I could not sleep at night. I actually went two weeks with no sleep. Let me tell you, after two weeks of no sleep you have serious problems. Now I was hospitalized from sleep deprivation. They pumped me full of some very serious sleep medications and highly additive narcotics.

I didn't like being high as a kite all the time so I started looking elsewhere. I looked into alternative therapy. That is when I found out about chiropractors and massage therapy. I found a chiropractor that offered chiropractic services along with massage, physical therapy, and some muscle stimulation.

I went to the chiropractor feeling skeptical. I was raised to think of them as quacks but at this point I was willing to try anything. The chiropractor did a thorough examination and told me it would take a while. He said my muscles were very tense and he did not want to make it worse. The first session he could barely do anything. He did tell me I would hurt worse the next day, which I did.

My insurance covered chiropractor service so I only had to pay an $8 co-pay. This made it easier so I went back. After a few sessions, I noticed my pain went from, "I want to kill myself" to "I can't take this." For me that was a huge improvement, so I continued seeing the chiropractor. Remember, the other doctors only pumped me full of pills.

After seeing the chiropractor for about two months, I experienced some real relief. I was no longer taking the highly addictive narcotics everyday and I was only taking the sleeping pills a few times a week. The pain started becoming tolerable, which was awesome.

I am not sure when, but at some point I became pain free and stopped taking the pain medication altogether. I don't see the chiropractor as often either. I now see him only when I start feeling tight and uneasy. I can't tell you how thankful I am for my chiropractor as the doctors really didn't offer me anything but medication. The chiropractor actually offered me pain relief.
