With so many different diets doing the rounds at the moment it's no wonder overweight people are turning to alternative weight loss methods. Instead of following a low-calorie eating plan and adding exercise to their day, some people are looking into different types of eating plans with the hope that they will not have to do any exercise or cut back too much on their favorite foods.

There are many of these strange diets popping up in the media. Most of them have been around for a long time, they simply get "re-vamped" every few years to keep them fresh in the hope that the media will continue to promote them. And promote them they do, especially if any celebrities are claiming to have followed "this diet" or "that diet" to drop weight quickly.

One of these re-vamped diets is the Alkaline Food Diet. It has been around for a long time, notably under different names like the Alkaline Acid Diet, the Alkaline Ash Diet, the pH Diet and the Miracle Diet.

The basis of the Alkaline Food Diet is to sustain a balance of pH in the foods that you eat. The body is to some extent alkaline, so it is best for you to eat a diet made up of foods that are alkaline. When you consume too much acidic food your system gets unbalanced, which can cause a lot of problems, including weight gain, fatigue, poor concentration, and depressed immunity which can lead to more severe conditions.

This diet involves eating foods that are alkalizing and not eating foods that are acidic. Alkalizing foods are best for your body and health, they aid in balancing the pH of your body. While the terms acid, alkaline and pH are quite familiar, many dieters do not know what they actually mean and what these terms have to do with health and nutrition.

Chemically speaking, acid and alkaline are polar opposites. If our bodies are made up of mostly alkaline cells, it makes sense to eat foods that support this system instead of fighting against it with acidic foods.

Acidic foods have a low pH and alkaline foods have a high pH. If you have too much acid in your body you will have a low pH, which can lead to being tired because your body is not in balance. Eating alkaline foods will help you get this balance because alkaline foods have a high pH.

If keeping our bodies in balance is as easy as eating more alkaline foods, everybody should be doing it instead of loading down and unbalancing our bodies with junk food. But is the Alkaline Food Diet just another fad diet? We could say, "Only time will tell", except that this diet has been around for a long time and many people swear that it works for them. Will it work for you?
