If you have perused your local paper or specialty magazine for campervans for sale, you probably have realised how many options there are. For many, it can be quite overwhelming, deciding whether to buy new or used, and all of the various vehicle and configuration options that are available. These five tips will help you immensely in helping pick the right one for you.

1.Size

They come in a few different sizes or configurations. Some of those available have roofs that are able to be raised once the vehicle is parked, whereas other vehicles have been modified to be taller than the vehicle they were originally derived from in the first place. The vehicle that has been permanently modified is going to drive differently than the one that has a fabric top that is raised because the permanent modification catches the wind differently and changes the centre of gravity for the vehicle. However, they are also more durable and better sealed up from the elements.

Also consider different length vehicles. Some of the different campervans for sale have different wheelbase options. Longer wheelbases will offer more room but make the vehicle drive differently and will add weight that will make it cost more to drive.

2. Pick a Conversion Vehicle

There are a number of different vehicles on the road today that are available. Each has its numerous positives and negatives. Deciding on the proper vehicle is going to be based on the size requirements you have as well as which engine you prefer and which options you feel you will need. Some of the decision may be based on practicality and for some on nostalgia as well.

3. Petrol or Diesel?

When given the options, almost everyone in the UK is going to say diesel, especially for a vehicle such as a campervan that is heavy and typically not that aerodynamic. However, some of the older campervans were not made with a diesel engine and while engine swaps are possible, they are often very labour intensive, requiring custom parts to be fabricated. Unless you intend on doing some of the work yourself on a conversion like that for an older campervan, consider purchasing a newer one with a diesel engine installed from the factory if having a oil-burner is a priority.

4. Features, Amenities and Options

The modern campervan can have almost, or at times, all the features of a motorcaravan or motorhome in a smaller vehicle. While they will not be able to hold as many people, the campervan now may have a stove, microwave and even shower facilities and a WC on some models. Deciding how much you need and where you intend on going with your campervan will help determine whether you need these amenities in your campervan.

5. New or Used?

There are advantages to both buying new or used campervans. With a new van, you have the ultimate control over amenities and the campervan will have a warranty. There will be no sacrifices if your budget will allow it. With a used van, you may have to compromise on the features a bit or accept features that you really will never use but you will pay quite a bit less money for the van itself. The typical campervan depreciates quite a bit in its first few years of service.
